A couple of posts ago, I mentioned that there was a company who jumped on my resume almost immediately after I’d submitted it to one of the job hunting boards. There was a scheduled 30-minute screening call, followed by an html link where I had to video-respond to five questions or so – one take, shoot and forget.

Recall that not only was there no response, but also the position closed and then was relisted with additional detail. Disappointing.

This morning, the inbox held a message from that company asking me to pick a time for a 20-minute technical interview with a Cybersecurity Solutions Architect.

Who knows? Sure, I’ve picked a time. I’m happy and grateful for the opportunity. And I’m continuing the hunt. Don’t get attached.

Last night I was browsing logs and doing my periodic revisit of my routing and firewall rules when, on a whim, I decided to add a time-based firewall rule blocking traffic between the front-end cloud vps with the static ip address, reverse proxy, and all of the extra iptables work; and the DMZed services hosted in the rear. In particular, that action disabled some websites, pleroma, matrix, and a few other things while I slept.

While all but essential notifications are blocked by the different devices’ do-not-disturb settings anyway, somehow it seems I slept better. With a little re-architecting of the network, I may just schedule flipping the switches on a cloud instance or two instead – saving a few dollars in the process. TBD – we’ll see.

In the meantime, I should probably at least put up a friendly 503 page for actual non-bot visitors to advertise “business hours.”

Happy Friday :-)
